Wire Hangers vs Plastic Hangers: Which Is Better for Your Business?

Gold wire suit hangers compared with alternative hanger materials

Both wire and plastic hangers have a place in a professional garment operation. The useful question is not which material is universally better, but which one fits a specific garment, service level and budget. Here is a practical comparison based on more than twenty years of supplying hangers to dry cleaners, hotels and apparel brands.

Cost per unit and total program cost

Galvanized wire hangers usually cost less per unit than moulded plastic hangers, and they take up less volume in storage and transport. Because wire hangers are thinner, a container holds more units, which lowers freight cost per hanger. For high-volume shirt programs, wire is normally the most economical choice.

Strength and garment support

Plastic hangers can be moulded into wide shoulders, clips and accessory hooks. Wire hangers are stronger for their thickness, especially in 13 gauge suit constructions, and they do not bend under a wet or heavy garment when the gauge is specified correctly. For tailored jackets, a 13 gauge wire suit hanger often holds its shape better than a thin plastic hanger.

Space efficiency on the rail and in transit

Wire hangers are roughly a third of the thickness of plastic hangers. That means more garments per rail, lower carton volume and fewer trucks for the same order. In busy dry cleaning plants and hotel housekeeping stores, this space saving is significant.

Presentation and branding

Plastic hangers offer colour variety out of the box, but wire hangers can be powder coated in white, gold, red or black, covered with printed paper, or combined with logo-printed shirt boards and shoulder guards. A coated wire hanger with a printed caped cover often delivers a more premium branded presentation at a lower unit cost.

Sustainability and recycling

Steel wire is widely recycled and holds value at end of life. Plastic hangers are recyclable in theory but are often mixed with other plastics and end up in general waste. If your customers ask about packaging and circularity, a recyclable steel hanger with paper accessories is a straightforward answer.

When plastic still makes sense

Plastic remains practical for clip hangers, childrenswear, heavy display hangers and some retail visual merchandising. Many operations use a mixed program: wire for cleaning and transport, plastic for display. The right supplier can help you split the range by garment and volume.
