Hanger Size and Wire Gauge Guide: 13", 16", 18" and 20"
Two numbers determine most wire hanger performance: the length of the shoulder and the gauge of the wire. Getting both right prevents shoulder marks, sagging and unnecessary cost.
What hanger length means
Hanger length is measured across the shoulder line, not from the hook to the bottom bar. A 16-inch hanger suits compact shirts and smaller sizes. An 18-inch hanger is the standard for adult shirts and light jackets. A 20-inch hanger is used for larger garments, knitwear and some retail displays. Drapery and industrial hangers use 13-inch and 18-inch forms depending on the fabric width and handling system.
As a rule, the hanger should end just inside the shoulder seam. A hanger that is too wide stretches the garment; one that is too narrow lets the shoulders drop and crease.
What wire gauge means
Wire gauge describes the thickness of the steel wire. Lower numbers mean thicker wire. Common hanger specifications are:
- 13 gauge - heavy duty, used for suit hangers, coats and industrial garments.
- 14.5 gauge - the standard for shirt hangers, balancing strength and cost.
- 16 gauge - lighter wire for low-cost laundry hangers and light garments.
The same hanger shape in a heavier gauge will carry more weight with less bending. If you are unsure, specify the heaviest garment the hanger will hold, including the weight of any wet fabric, and ask for a sample to test.
Matching size and gauge to your program
- Dry cleaning shirts: 16-inch or 18-inch, 14.5 gauge, powder coated white or gold.
- Tailored suits and coats: 16-inch or 18-inch, 13 gauge, with a shaped shoulder.
- Knitwear: 18-inch or 20-inch knit profile to spread weight.
- Curtains and drapery: 13-inch or 18-inch drapery form.
- Uniform and workwear plants: long neck or drop bar industrial hangers in 13 gauge.
